Keyboard Shortcuts

Effective use of the shell is an easy way to save time on your daily work. For this tutorial, we'll explore some bash tips and keyboard shortcuts that are both useful and fun. Keep in mind that bash does not save settings between executions, so for permanent changes you will need to modify your .bashrc file which can be found in the home directory (or create one if it's not there).

Key Meaning
Ctrl + A Jump to line start
Ctrl + E Jump to line end
Ctrl + L Clear the terminal
Ctrl + K Delete all characters from cursor until end-of-line (emacs style)
Ctrl + U Delete from cursor to start of line
Ctrl + W Delete one word backwards
Ctrl + T Swap the two characters at the cursor position and before
Esc + T Swap the two words at the cursor position and before
Ctrl + Y Yank (paste) the last deleted word/line
Ctrl + _ undo (saved for each line). Yes that's an underscore after the ctrl
Ctrl + R History search. Press Ctrl-R and then start to type part of a command
